First draft: Complete!
- Details
The first draft of my play is complete! Two acts, 11 scenes, and 110 pages. I'm quite happy with the story arc, and I feel great about how it came out. Now the hard work begins: revisions, editing, table read(s) -- then rinse and repeat.
Writing a Full-length Play -- Like Bon Jovi, I'm Halfway There
- Details
The other day I wrapped up the first draft of the first of two acts of the yet-to-be-named full-length play that I'm writing. This is my first play that will be longer than ten minutes! It's been challenging, but very fun, too. It's a completely different process than how I approach a ten-minute show. Things have been carefully planned out, but even the best plans get changed...all the time. I'm steaming on to Act Two (of Two) very soon. This play is a being written as part of a collaboration project that I mentioned in a prior post.
I've already planted a few "Easter eggs" in the script, and there more to come. For example: There's a reference to a certain real-life friend of mine who was on a certain game show that rhymes with "Schmeopardy". Some of my poetry is likely to make an appearance, too.
Lots of good stuff happening. Stay tuned!
Book Collaboration Project in 2020
- Details
I am very excited to announce that I will be working with fellow actor and writer Danielle Bannister to help collaborate on her next book draft. Danielle has written a number of successful books which can be found here.
The book will be a romance -- her speciality. But as an actor, she has chosen to put a theatre front and center in the story. The main character in the book is an actress, and the story will be about her and the show that she is in rehearsals for. That's where I come in (you didn't really expect me to write a book, did you?) I am responsible for coming up with the material the characters in the book will be rehearsing. That means using some of my existing scripts or perhaps writing a completely new full-length play. I am definitely leaning in the "writing a full-length play" direction.
I am excited to work on this project for a number of reasons:
- Danielle is a super-talented writer and actor
- She and I have very similiar personalities and senses of humor (and according to her, we are both "sort of crazy")
- We both love what we do -- writing and acting, amongst other things
- In the end, I'll have a new play in my repertoire
- The book will be great P.R. for my writing
- Some of my material will be in a BOOK. That alone is the coolest thing ever!
Work has already begun on both my side as well as Danielle's. A project like this doesn't happen overnight, but I am looking forward to the process.
You can check out Danielle's blog entry about this project here.
I had Chinese food the day we announced this collaboration -- this was my fortune:
Happy New Year, all!
Up next: Almost, Maine -- Feb 28, 29 & Mar 1, 2020

Up next: I'll be playing the role of Steve in Schoolhouse Arts Center's blackbox production of Almost, Maine. This is such a wonderful play, and I'm looking forward to being part of this "one weekend only" production, February 28, 29 & March 1, 2020.
2019: That's a Wrap! Planning for 2020...
- Details
Well, I've just wrapped up my final show of 2019, A Christmas Carol. We had a great run with eight performances to very large houses!
It's been a really fun year of theatre -- here's a quick recap:
- I performed in the following shows: Noises Off (Frederick Fellowes) at Schoolhouse Arts Center, Annie (Oliver Warbucks) at Windham Center Stage Theatre, Annie (Oliver Warbucks) at Lisbon High School / Community Theatre, and A Christmas Carol at Schoolhouse Arts Center. I've done a lot of theatre in the past year, but I have to say, this year was such a highlight. Playing Warbucks in Annie was a dream come true -- the fulfillment of a bucket list item for sure.
- When I wasn't on stage doing theatre, I squeezed in as many improv performances as I could with ComedySportz Maine!
- Attended and performed at the ComedySportz East Coast Tournament in Boston.
- I taught a couple of improv classes as a substitute -- fun!
- I participated in an Acorn Productions 24-hour theatre project. I directed a really wonderful play called Finding an Ending, written by Cory King. Cory did an amazing job writing such an amazing play in just a few hours, and my actors knocked it out of the park with the performances.
- My play Mummy and Me was performed in King of Crows VII in September.
- My play Power Struggle was performed by some of the senior residents at The Woods at Canco (retirement community). They did so well -- it made my day!
- I wrote four or five short plays. My play Weekend at Herbie's won the July 2019 theatre deathmatch at The Crowbait Club and will be featured in King of Crows VIII in September 2020. I also submitted plays to three play festivals; I've gotten two rejections so far. Still waiting to hear about my entry in to the Maine Playwrights Festival 2020.
- My sketch comedy group wrote and performed our first show in February. We've all been busy this year, so we haven't done anything since, but we're hoping to get back to it soon. I wrote a few sketches for this show, some of which made it in, and others that I have ready to go for next time. We also filmed one of our sketches on location at a restaurant in New Hampshire -- we have not published this video yet, but stay tuned!
- ImprovBoston's 3rd Annual Sketchy Holiday HA HA show in December included my sketch Quality Assurance.
- I participated in a 48-hour (ish) film project. We were given a choice of two genres, an occupation, a line of dialog, and a prop -- all of which had to be included in our film. The finished product (called The Yard) came out great! We're still waiting to hear the results. Looking forward to being able to share this one with the world. This was my first film project and it was really fun! UPDATE 12/16/19: We came in 2nd place in this world-wide contest!
- Completely rebuilt my actor/director/playwright website -- www.randyhunt.info.
- And last but not least, I attended a number of other shows as an audience member.
There are a LOT of theatre opportunities coming up in the new year. There are so many, I've had to create a spreadsheet to track the shows, audition dates, performance dates, etc. to try to plan out which ones I'm interested in auditioning for. First audition is 12/16/19 for Almost, Maine.
Additionally, I'm excited to announce that I'll be directing a black box production at Schoolhouse Arts Center September 18-20.
More to come. Stay tuned!
